Job Discription
- Material Grades: Commonly uses 6000 series (Mg-Si) for structural/architectural applications due to good weldability and strength, or 5052/5083 series for excellent corrosion resistance.
- Fabrication Standards: Adheres to standards ensuring precision, such as ISO 6361 for sheets/strips and WTIA TN 02 for welding.
- Dimensions & Tolerances: Precision is paramount, often managed by Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery to achieve exact dimensions required for structural assembly.
- Surface Finish: Options include anodizing (for increased hardness/corrosion resistance), powder coating (for color/protection), or mechanical finishing like brushing or polishing.
- Joining Methods: TIG welding is preferred for high-precision, clean welds; MIG welding is used for speed on thicker sections. Structural fasteners (rivets, bolts) are also used.
Job Requirement
- Tools: Dedicated tools for aluminium must be used; tools previously used on steel should be avoided to prevent contamination.
- Handling: Aluminium must be stored in dry areas, protected from grease/water, and not stored in direct contact with steel to prevent galvanic corrosion.
- Welding Prep: The natural oxide layer must be removed before welding to prevent defects.
